The Siete Lagunas / Mulhacen Circuit

Sierra Nevada, Spain, June 24 – 29, 2010


In 2008 the A lo Bestia traverse provided an exciting and tough fastpacking experience but a logistical challenge. In 2009 we modified it to provide a circular and even better journey and in 2010 we will repeat this fantastic experience under the name of the
" Circuito Siete Lagunas / Mulhacen ".

Itinerary :

June 24th
Airport pick up ( Granada if possible, Malaga second choice ).
Arrivals will need to be coordinated as it is long drive to start.
Drive to Trevelez ( 1476m, the highest village in Spain ).
Hotel, relax eat.

June 25th
09.00hrs Breakfast
Local walk / run. Check kit and prepare pack.
20.00hrs Evening meal and briefing.

June 26th
09.00hrs Breakfast
Check packs.
10.30hrs Leave Trevelez following Rio Trevelez, Puerto Jerez, ridge, summit Cerro Pelao
( 3181m ), then on to Puntal de Juntillas ( 3139m ), Puntal de la Justicia o Atalaya ( 3135m ), Pico del Cuervo ( 3144m ) and On to first night " ‘bivvy " at Laguna de Vacares ( 2880m ).

June 27th
08.30hrs climb ridge and on to Puntal de Vacares ( 3136m ), ridge and Summits to Alcazaba
( 3371m ). Descend to Siete Lagunas ( 3000m ) and then ascend to summit Mulhacen
( 3482m ) mainland Spains highest  peak. We bivvy on the top, ( weather permitting ).

June 28th
08.30hrs Descend back to Trevelez.
14.30hrs Celebrate with large lunch. Evening free plus dinner.

June 29th
Leave for airport.

The route and timetable are subject to weather conditions.

Notes : This is a tough circuit more suited to mountain runners and ideal training for events like the UTMB. We travel light, move quickly ( but not always running ) and need to carry food, water, sleeping bag, ( one suitable for 2 seasons, with additional bivvy bag, we don’t take tents ). You need some warm clothes for wearing / sleeping in. Although it can be 30C or more during the day temperatures at over 3000m can be cold once sun goes down.

You will also need cooker, ( gaz or hexi ) dehydrated meals, water ( carry at least 2litres preferably with Eletewater added ) we top up from snow melt as we go.

Kahtoola running spikes or Yaktraks and trail poles are compulsory as are windproof/waterproof jacket and trousers, survival blanket, hat and gloves. A head torch is also recommended.

Cost : which excludes flights and your dehydrated meals, ( which I can get for you out here if required ), includes half board in Trevelez and airport pickup / return is € 575 euros.

Deposit : € 150 euros secures you a place.
