Trail Run Spain - Preparation. |
As the majority of runners will be working 9 to 5 jobs and maybe running trails or racing at weekend correct " holiday " preparation is important. It would be very easy to get carried away, running each day, in the usually beautiful weather, and therefore suffering an overuse injury. It would put paid to any forthcoming race plans and waste the holiday.
| • |
Plan to have an easy week of running each side of the holiday. |
| |
|
| • |
Give yourself time to recover from the travelling, although in our case that shouldn’t take long as most of you could be here within 3 hours, ( which is why it is so easy to plan a long weekend out here ). |
| |
|
| • |
Make sure to increase the amount of rest you take whilst here rather than have late nights, sightsee and train. The Spanish do tend to eat late, ( 10pm ) but we try to arrange for evening meals to be ready around 8pm. |
If you are new to trail running it would be worth you checking out www.raidlight.com for some very good, well designed kit and clothing, www.inov-8.com for excellent trail running shoes and www.montane.co.uk for more great clothing. We have special deals with these companies should you wish to make a purchase either before your arrival or after you return home.
See our Inn for Out " shop " page for more products.

( Review of Long and Ultra Distance Off-Road Running
" ... being talked to by people who have experienced what you are thinking of putting
yourself through. "
" However, this one really does go into the minutiae of how to move up from the marathon distance to longer distance trail running. As such it is a really good place to start. You are given a plan to move up your distance, then lots of practical advice about the detail of
long running - gauging time and distance, nutrition on the move, support teams, darkness, walking, rest and recovery, etc."
" I can’t but help think that these are the sort of publications that you would like to have on your running bookshelf, to refer to as necessary, and look forward to seeing further issues
in the series. "

I first became aware of the Likeys name on www.themds.co.uk website, a site / " club ", worth joining for anyone thinking of entering or already entered in the Marathon des Sables or similar races.
The information on the forum regarding equipment and training is very useful and I realized that much of it came via " Little fat welshman " whom I later discovered was Martin Like, the founder of Likeys.
I looked at the www.likeys.com site and was amazed by the number of specialist brands the company stock. All items tried and tested in ultra marathons, stage races and challenges all over the world by Martin and his staff, Matt, Barry and Sue. Even better was the fact that they promote organise and / or sponsor events like the Canadian 6633 and British Ultra as well as organise training camps.
The Likeys store is in Brecon, Powys, telephone 01874 711850 or check out their site for mail ordering.
All of us at Team Axarsport look forward to working with Likeys on the continuing development of ultra/adventure racing products and on the promotion of good value and well organized races.
Watch this space for details of forthcoming training camps and our own Al Andalus Ultra Trail, July 13th to 17th 2009.
